Kevin Breen

Kevin Breen – Editor

Pacific Northwest editor. Fan of literary fiction, CNF deep dives, and crime thrillers. Eager to work in service of your manuscript!

Overview

Working at the macro level is my favorite part of being a small-press editor. I have the immense pleasure of working with memoirists, crime writers, literary novelists, and creative nonfiction authors as they consider the building blocks of their manuscripts. I've been doing this work for five years, since I graduated with my MFA in 2020. I strive to help authors realize the cleanest, clearest versions of their stories, rather than superimposing my ideas onto their drafts. It's your byline after all!

A recent project I loved editing was Nick Rees Gardner’s short story collection, Delinquents. The book went on to earn praise from prize-winning authors like Morgan Talty and Emily Fridlund as well as from outlets like Foreword Reviews. In regards to working with me, Nick said “sometimes, during rewrites, I wondered if you could read my mind.”

Other clients have called me “deft,” “generous,” and “utterly reliable.”

I grew up in the Philadelphia area. Afterward, I studied Writing at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore, then did an AmeriCorps year in Yakima, Washington. I received an MFA in creative writing from Eastern Washington University and my debut story was published in the Gettysburg Review. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing, camping, and keeping my dog from chewing things he shouldn't.

Work experience

Latah Books

Jun, 2020 — Present
I do a little bit of everything at Latah Books-- developmental edits, copy edits, proofreading, interior layout, cover design, query letter support, and manuscript critiques. I also help screen manuscripts submitted to Latah Books and aid the press with marketing and distribution work.

Dev Spotlight

Jun, 2020 — Present
I copy edit articles geared toward software engineers and developers. Often, I am editing to improve concision, eliminate passive voice, and increase adherence to the AP style guide.

Willow Springs Books

Jan, 2019 — Dec, 2019 (11 months)
As Fiction Editor, I reviewed book-length submissions and helped choose the Spokane Prize finalists, an annual contest for collections of short stories. Once Valerie Vogrin won the contest, I worked as the liaison between her and the press, and also led the editing process for her collection. Prior to working on Valerie Vogrin's book, I served as a proofreader for the previous year's winning collection.

Eastern Washington University Writers' Center

Sep, 2018 — Jun, 2020 (over 1 year)
I facilitated one-on-one appointments with student writers at EWU. Students made appointments with me for a range of reasons, both macro and micro. The topics of our appointments ranged from brainstorming to larger revision needs and even style guide and grammatical support. I regularly staffed 100-150 appointments each academic quarter.

New England Review

Sep, 2017 — Jan, 2021 (over 3 years)
Each month, I read and assessed 20 short story submissions for New England Review. I passed along high-quality submissions to the NER editors, so that they'd be considered for publication.

I think Kevin may be an editing genius. He completed a developmental edit on my manuscript Summer of 2023. He identified both strengths and weaknesses in the manuscript, then went beyond that to offer detailed suggestions for improvement. I was blown away by the quality of his work and am now ex...

This was the second time I'd worked with Kevin. I will work with him again. To avoid hyperbole (not that Kevin doesn't serve some), I will summarize with a few adjectives and phrases: professional, diligent, timely, helpful.

Kevin's suggestions were so good that I incorporated a couple of them in the final version of my query. He also gave me invaluable guidance on personalizing my pitch to specific agents. I'm still chewing my knuckles, but with more confidence -- thanks to Kevin.

Good editing when it comes to fact checking. Copy editing skills ok for editing college essays. Poor editing skills for creative writing.

How has AI affected you as a professional in the publishing industry?

At it's most basic, the use of genAI is just another differentiator for me. Do I typically edit erotica? Nope. Do I usually collaborate on AI-drafted novels? No. In other words, editors all have different personal tastes, professional niches, and areas of expertise. I am not jumping at the chanc...

How do you tailor your profile on Reedsy to attract your ideal clients?

In my Reedsy profile, I emphasize that I work with an author's vision, rather than opposing or debunking it. There are two reasons for this. First, I know many authors worry about hiring a professional who will encourage them to head off in a direction they have no desire to go. I want authors to...

Do you feel the EFA's resources justify the membership fee? Why or why not?

I am a relatively new EFA member, but so far, I appreciate how the membership complements my Reedsy profile. Another freelance editor in my network told me they believe the primary EFA member benefit is the site's job postings, and I agree. The EFA both hosts a job board on the site and emails in...
